Tony Norman

Tony Norman

Tony Norman is a successful writer. He is co-author of the highly successful sports book

‘Alan Mullery – The Autobiography’, which was recently named ‘Book of the Week’ by

The Sunday Times. He is also an established children’s writer whose work is published in the UK, USA and Australia.

Tony gives writing workshops in schools to single class groups at both KS1 & KS2 levels. (Up to four workshops per school day.) His aim is to share his enthusiasm for writing with the children he meets. Workshops show how writing stories, poems and song lyrics are all part of the same creative world. Writing is f-u-n. That’s the message!

During his workshops, Tony reads one of his books and then discusses with the children points arising from the story. These all relate to themes included in the National Literacy Strategy. Workshops where pupils act out one of Tony’s published plays for children are also available. These are best suited to small groups.

The ‘Once Upon A  Story’ section of each workshop features Tony’s top ten tips on how to write a short story. Audience participation songs and poems are also included in every performance. The content of each workshop is geared to the relevant key stage level.

Workshop themes include:

Key Stage 1

Imaginary & fantasy worlds – using Tony’s book ‘Sky Bikers’

Friendship & teamwork – using Tony’s book ‘Race of A Lifetime’

Performing & discussing a play – using Tony’s published play ‘The Fame Game’

Let’s Write A Song! Pupils write and sing new lyrics to one of Tony Norman’s children’s songs. They also write their own Blues song!

Key Stage 2

Creating a fantasy world & characters – using Tony’s book ‘Terror World’

Being in a Pop Band – using Tony’s book ‘Nervous’. (Also covers bullying at school and how to rise above it.)

A Play / Football. Performing & discussing Tony’s play ‘The Match From Hell’

Friendship & families – using Tony’s book ‘Race of A Lifetime’

Persuasive text – a discussion based on Tony’s book ‘Simply The Best?’        (Tony tries to convince pupils his ideas on the best pop star, sports star, artist etc., are indisputable. Children will learn their opinions are every bit as valid as his!)

Responses to Tony’s visits to schools:

'What a successful visit - the children so enjoyed meeting you and hearing
your stories, poems and songs first hand. We feel very honoured that you travelled

all that way to visit us and I hope that it will be the first of many visits…'

Stephanie Hayward, Teacher at Southborough Primary school

'We are delighted with the book and much of this is due to your hard work from the very first Madrid workshop with the students and teachers, right the way through to the end product. Thanks for your enormous contribution and I hope we can work together on another project in the near future.'

David Blundell, Communications Manager of the British Council in Madrid, following publication of the 'Give Us Back Our Planet' poetry book, written by school children from Spain and England and edited by Tony Norman
